Summer Language Arts (2x per week) Grades 2- 3; Grades 4- 5)Our Summer Language Arts courses are grounded in metacognitive methods whereby students learn to analyze and evaluate their own thinking processes in order to become active agents in the learning process. A crucial component of our program is teaching students how to communicate clearly and concisely in both oral and written forms. We achieve these goals through three core components: vocabulary, critical/textual analysis and writing. Each week students are introduced to a series of new word lists with an array of exercises in order to help them learn how to use the vocabulary words in context. As well, various pieces of literature are read and examined on a weekly basis. We introduce students to both classical and contemporary short stories, essays and poems. These readings prompt classroom discussions where students analyze both the weekly literary selection and the critical interpretations of their peers in a spirit of constructive and respectful inquiry. Finally, writing is an integral element of our program. We begin by emphasizing the writing of complete sentences that express main ideas in a logical and coherent manner. Our priority is to move students from writing a series of strong sentences to series of structured paragraphs. Students receive writing assignments on a weekly basis, and the importance of understanding writing as a process is pressed upon them. Weekly writing assignments are edited and returned for revising with a second (and sometimes third) draft required. Language Arts grades 3/4. Language Arts grades 5/6.
